Where I came from
My journey to the United States was one of survival and adaptation. As a teen refugee from Rwanda in 1994, I faced the daunting task of rebuilding my life in a foreign land after losing my parents and brother to genocide. Amidst the challenges of adjusting to a new language and culture, I harbored a deep desire for education. Despite the setbacks and the long road ahead, I remained resolute in my pursuit of higher learning. My ultimate goal was not just personal advancement, but to acquire the necessary tools to give back to society, to offer support and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, especially those who, like me, had faced tremendous adversity.

My journey into the world of healthcare began in a nursing home, where I discovered my passion for the geriatric community. Working as a therapy tech, I witnessed firsthand the resilience and determination of seniors facing health challenges. Their stories inspired me, and I found fulfillment in helping them progress and heal. Recognizing the importance of keeping them active and engaged, I took on additional responsibilities as an activities aide, drawing upon my artistic background to enrich their lives. Through these experiences, I formed deep connections with the residents, learning from their wisdom and cherishing the opportunity to make a positive impact in their daily lives.

The COVID-19 pandemic thrust me into a new role as a patient care coordinator, where I found purpose in serving others during a time of crisis. As the world grappled with uncertainty, I stepped up to coordinate care for patients, ensuring they received the support and resources they needed. The challenges were immense, but so was the sense of fulfillment in being able to help, particularly within the geriatric community. Beyond the immediate needs, I recognized the long-term implications of the pandemic on healthcare delivery and became determined to advocate for better access and support for seniors. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to geriatric healthcare administration and fueled my resolve to make a lasting difference in the lives of older adults.
